Serenity in Tragedy

Modern day Hiroshima is a beautiful city, full of serenity and peacefulness despite the horrific aftermath of the atomic bombing in 1945.  After having seen the mega metropolis of Tokyo, I expected Hiroshima to be similar, but perhaps more desolate.  My expectations could not have been further from the truth.  The rebuilt city is simply beautiful.

In the midst of the greenery and flowers stands a shell of a building, called the Atomic Bomb Dome, a haunting reminder of the tragedy that once felled Hiroshima.  Near that site is Peace Memorial Park, a space with museums and memorials dedicated to preventing such a tragedy from ever occurring again in the world.  Despite the heavy context, it is difficult not to feel serene here.

    • The city itself is beautiful – I highly recommend a visit. And the Peace Memorial Museum is one of the best museums I’ve ever seen. It’s emotionally challenging but totally worth it!
