This week’s travel theme at Where’s My Backpack is Simplify. Inspired by Thoreau’s sojourn at Walden Pond, it is all about ridding ourselves of physical and metaphorical clutter.
What better way to simplify than to immerse oneself in the beauty of nature?
This ashram and Hare Krishna temple in the Atacama Desert was serene and inspiring. Ashrams are meant to be places to de-clutter and dedicate oneself to the tasks of devotion, meditation, and service, in essence, simplification.
The rock garden at Ryoan-ji in Kyoto is the original zen garden on which most others are based. Its simple layout and atmosphere makes it a great place for contemplation and focusing on the essentials.
This week’s theme has inspired me to get rid of some of the physical clutter in my life as well, so I’m off to do some cleaning!
